Calling all vintage lovers! I am no academic just a serious lover of the aesthetic so I enjoy giving talks and advice on how to buy vintage or what to invest in. Good examples of iconic period clothing are now valuable commodities, just like any other antique or collectable. They have become increasingly collectable. This is reflected in the number of items for sale across different platforms and the prices they now command.

Vintage Laura Ashley has consistently increased in both, so much so that I now use it as my number one vintage buying tip. To put it simply, well made items with an instantly recognisable design heritage will retain their wearability, value and levels of demand. Very Gatsby-esque and highly sought after. The exciting part about collecting Laura Ashley is that it has gained momentum online but is still widely available at low prices in second hand shops and some vintage shops and fairs.

Thanks to shows like Picnic at Hanging Rock and Westworld , brands like Batsheva and Ganni , and an industry shift towards the hyper-feminine, the Little House on the Prairie look has gone from farmhouse to fashion in just a few seasons.

The first true Laura Ashley dresses were made in These dresses had a rural, old fashioned feel, and were right in step with the craze for.

Last week was the turn of Georgette Mosbacher, the New York socialite and beauty products entrepreneur, who saw in Laura Ashley what other potential bidders had seen: a strong but mismanaged brand name and a depressed stock. Sir Bernard politely turned away Mrs. Mosbacher, whose husband, Robert A. Mosbacher, was the Commerce Secretary in the Bush Administration. And today, with Mrs. Mosbacher’s approach having been reported by a London newspaper on Sunday and speculation mounting about a possible takeover, Sir Bernard put out word through his advisers that he had no interest in selling his 34 percent stake to anyone, especially not with the stock in the doldrums.

Sir Bernard, his advisers said, is committed to seeing through the latest in a series of attempts to revive Laura Ashley, which until stumbling several years ago had prospered by capturing in its clothes and furnishings an idealized version of English country life. So far, he has the backing of the other big shareholder, Jusco, a Japanese retailer that acquired a 15 percent stake in People working with Mrs.

Mosbacher and her financial adviser, Paine Webber, said she would not make an offer over the objections of Sir Bernard. But some analysts think other bids will be forthcoming if the company cannot turn itself around quickly.

You could say Laura Ashley was the forerunner to other labels that have seen wild success in recent years by promoting quirky Britishness — Cath Kidston and Boden among them. Back in my s childhood, I swooned over magazine shoots of grand boudoirs in Ashley chintz. The company branched out into clothes, with smock shirts and dresses, and the s and early s were the blockbuster years, with more than 70 shops.

Then, after Laura died in , the company floundered when fashion changed — 90s minimalism and frilly blouses did not go. So why on earth has Laura Ashley waited until now to grab a slice of the puff-sleeved pie? The verdict? Some pretty, well-designed pieces — but not quite the same trend-setting, dream-inspiring X-factor that made my year-old heart beat faster. Died: 17 September , in Coventry, England. Company Website: www. Welsh designer Laura Ashley developed and distilled the British romantic style of neo-Victorianism, reflecting past eras in clothing, textiles, accessories, and furnishings and did so demonstrating classic country styling. Her approach to design was inspired by her environment, the surrounding Welsh countryside, and her yearning to return to all things natural.

Integrating ideas adopted from the designs and qualities of past eras, she combined elements to create a look of nostalgic simplicity and naive innocence. Floral sprigged cotton fabrics, often directly adapted and developed from 18th-and 19th-century patterns, paisleys, and tiny prints worked with romantic detailing to create a style that was original and easily recognized.

Ashley’s style possessed old world charm with individual rustic freshness, reflected in traditional beliefs of bygone days. Victorian nightshirts, Edwardian-style dresses, the introduction of the long smock in , delicately trimmed with lace, pin-tucked bodices, tiered skirts, and full puffed sleeves became her trademark, aimed at the middle market and retailed at affordable prices.

This week April is Fashion Revolution Week when people are encouraged to look at who made their clothes and what working conditions they labour under. Many of the workers were making clothes for us to buy cheaply in the West. Even though I buy nearly all of my clothes second-hand someone still made them. Although the label says Made in Great Britain perhaps revealing its age I wanted to know where their clothes are manufactured in I have a very cosy image of Laura Ashley: homespun tunics and classic English Rose dresses.

Cant belief when I went in to see there reviews that other people had the same experience as me in It was my second ever visit to Laura Ashley. The first visit was Three-month waiting time, ordered in May, delivery date 9th August. I took the day off work to wait in for the delivery. We were called by a delivery operative today – the day before the delivery day – at pm to say furniture isn’t being delivered tomorrow, and we needed to call Customer Services.

We called Customer Services. Spent 45 minutes on the phone, most of it on hold. They weren’t able to deliver on the due date, or the following day either, because of “team problems”. No further explanation was provided. They weren’t actually able to confirm when furniture would be delivered at all??!! Got the hump and asked for a refund, They weren’t able to process a refund over the phone either.

They weren’t able to transfer the call to a manager because there were “no managers available to speak to”. Customer services is open but there are no managers present?
